Produced in the 1950s, THE NAVY WAY was one of many films created by the service to instill a moral backbone in service personnel as part of an overall Navy Moral Standards and Character Education Program. The target for this film appears to be officers charged with leadership, who needed to deal with the attitudes, mixed backgrounds, and lack of motivation by blue jackets. With so many of the men in service having only a high school education, films like this one attempted to show officers how they can shape men, and how to convince them that patience, study, and discipline can lead to a better life and career in service, and better morale. The film shows two different leadership styles and how one, the paternalistic officer, triumphs over the other. The film includes an extended "leave...

They were once invaded by the United States. President James Polk felt California, Utah, New Mexico, Nevada, and Arizona should be part of his territory. Polk was initially nice about it, offering to buy the land, but when he was rejected, he ordered military forces to seize it by force in 1846. By 1848, Mexico had lost those states, which amounted to half of its property, to Polk’s aggression. 2. It isn’t really named after Mexico. New Mexico was coined in 1563 by Don Francisco de Ibarra, a governor of a Mexican province who thought the Indian people he saw in the territory reminded him of Aztecs—a discovery he later messaged as a kind of “new Mexico.” Mexico didn’t become known as Mexico until it dropped the New Spain label in 1821. 3. People weren’t really sure what happened on July 16, 1945, the day the government detonated the first atomic bomb in Los Alamos: they were told it was an ammunitions explosion. While the engineering feat was later celebrated, some believe the resulting radiation caused health problems for nearby residents. On July 16, 1945, the very first atomic bomb was detonated in the desert sands of the Jornada del Muerto in south-central New Mexico. Known by its code name, Trinity, it was of the same design as the bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, a few weeks later. The Trinity Site is located on the White Sands Missile Range and is now a National Historic Site. 4. In 1947, a local found debris from an unidentified craft 75 miles outside of Roswell, New Mexico. Military personnel quickly retrieved it and told media it was a collapsed weather balloon; a skeptical public believed otherwise. The town has since become a popular tourist attraction. 5. It’s home to something that resembles another world. The White Sands National Monument sports over 275 square miles of white gypsum sand, which makes it resemble a kind of albino desert landscape. Because there’s hardly any source of water, native animals like the kangaroo rat have evolved to get their hydration from food sources like seeds. 6. Bill Gates and Paul Allen co-founded Microsoft in Albuquerque in 1976. The company moved to Washington in 1979. 7. The city of Santa Fe, founded by Spanish colonists in 1610, is the oldest city in the state and the oldest state capital city in the United States. Santa Fe (meaning "holy faith" in Spanish) had a population of 69,204 in 2012. The city's full name as founded remains La Villa Real de la Santa Fe de San Francisco de Asís ("The Royal City of the Holy Faith of Saint Francis of Assisi"). Shown here are participants in the 2011-2012 Facilities Maintenance Technician Certification Training Program (FMTC) with Green Construction Endorsement through the Banner Center for Construction. The program was created at the request of local housing authorities to train and assess facilities maintenance personnel. The goal is to create higher performance levels, reduce employment and insurance costs, and to improve workplace safety. FMTC combines three (3) national industry certifications with an option to earn an additional two (2) through online assessment. Each national certificate is a completion point within the overall credential. Successful completers received an OSHA 10-Hour Safety Certification, became certified technicians under the National Apartment Association's "Certificate for Apartment Maintenance Technician (CAMT)", and were recognized as green construction technicians through the National Center for Construction Education and Research's "Your Role in the Green Environment". Graduates also became eligible to sit for the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Universal 608 Certification exam, and to sit for the Green Advantage Environmental Certification exam through Green Advantage, Inc.

The film includes an extended "leave" segment at the 8:30 mark, with sailors getting into trouble in hotels with women of ill repute, and getting something he'll regret for a lifetime — a venereal disease. Drunks are seen at the 10 minute mark, getting in trouble on liberty. The film was shot aboard USS Piedmont (AD–17), a Dixie-class destroyer tender built during World War II for the United States Navy. We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! See something interesting? Tell people what it is and what they can see by writing something for example like: "01:00:12:00 -- President Roosevelt is seen meeting with Winston Churchill at the Quebec Conference." Carburizing and hardening gear teeth of gears, pinion shafts, bearing surfaces and other components subject to wear is a common heat treatment practice. The parts shown are ring gears for a mining application. Case depth of the heat treatment was 0.150" deep and surface hardness HRC 58 - 62. Keeping gears round and flat is an integral requirement of the heat treatment to minimize post heat treat grinding. Metlab, with pit furnaces up to 15' in diameter by 12' deep has heat treated gears that weigh up to 50,000 pounds with case depth requirements in excess of 0.250" deep.

This 4-minute video shows the motorcycles and riders on the Central Route of the 2014 "Rolling Thunder" Run to the Wall. Northbound on Santa Fe Avenue, they are passing the main Fountain Fire Station and the Fountain Police Station. They are passing under the ceremonial American flag displayed by personnel of the Fountain, Colorado Fire Department. This is one of 3 (possibly 4) groups of eastbound riders that will converge for Memorial Day weekend ceremonies in Washington, D.C., and for many, a visit to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. With a couple thousand more miles to travel, this group will be much larger when they join up with all the other patriots making the Run to the Wall. Many members of the crowd along the street are American Legion Riders from Post 38 in Security, Colorado. They had gathered in a parking lot alongside the fire station to great the Rolling Thunder riders. NOTE: The first time I heard the term, Rolling Thunder, it referred to air combat operations over North Vietnam. Special thanks to Fountain Deputy Chief of Police Bill Elder for giving me permission to shoot this video from a second-floor balcony of the Fountain Police Station. He was on-scene on Saturday afternoon while officers of the Fountain PD were escorting the riders and controlling various intersections as the procession of riders passed through the city.
